At the Ji Laboratory in Chicago, we are modeling ARDS, sepsis, and sarcoidosis cohorts combining cutting-edge functional multi-omics, AI approaches, and patient-derived models.
Explore Our ResearchThe Ji Laboratory in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine is led by Dr. James (Hong-Long) Ji, MD, PhD. Our current research focuses on clinical studies on ARDS, sepsis, and pulmonary sarcoidosis.
Through innovative techniques including scRNAseq, metaproteomics, host proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, clinicomics, machine learning, and human primary cell 3D organoids, we aim to identify new phenotypes, endotypes, druggable targets, biomarkers, and predictive models that can benefit personalized medicine (precision medicine).
Our lab has established humanized mouse models and human iPSC lines to study the role of the causal genes (and signals) in acute lung injury and regeneration.
Meet Our TeamInvestigating epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) and surfactant proteins in lung injury, edema, and repair mechanisms using humanized mouse models and iPSC organoids.
Studying the role of fibrinolysis and D-dimers in COVID-19 pathogenesis, with focus on alveolar epithelial injury mechanisms and resolution of pulmonary edema.
Applying cutting-edge scRNAseq, proteomics, and metaproteomics approaches to identify biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets in respiratory diseases.

We are thrilled to share that Angelos Vasilopoulos, a dedicated member of our research team, has been selected for the Dr. Mitch Fink Presidential Travel Award by the Shock Society. This highly competitive honor is awarded to exceptional early-career investigators based on the scientific merit of their abstract submissions and overall potential as future leaders in shock and trauma research.
Angelos will receive up to $1,000 in travel support to attend the Annual Conference of the Shock Society, held May 31 – June 3, 2025.
We are incredibly proud of Angelos for this well-deserved recognition. His continued dedication to translational science and academic excellence brings honor to our lab and Loyola University Chicago.
Way to go, Angelos!
